How could Jesus' Disciples' wicked desire to prove which one of them was greatest have affected Christianity?

If they were selfishly withholding the teachings of Jesus like you say, then how did all those passages you quoted even make it into the Bible to begin with? This stuff only existed in oral tradition until several decades after the Crucifiction. Why would they pass on this stuff that makes them look bad?
